Tucked into a quiet lane just off the main square, the Old Cathedral, known locally as the Alter Dom or the Ignatiuskirche, was built by the Jesuit order between 1669 and 1683 and dedicated to Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Its restrained twin-towered exterior, crowned with green onion domes, gives little hint of the lavish rose-pink marble columns, gilded stucco, and glowing altarpieces waiting inside. When the Jesuit order was suppressed in 1773 the building stood empty, until Emperor Joseph II founded the Diocese of Linz and raised it to cathedral status in 1785, a role it held until 1909. Music lovers know it above all for its Chrismann organ, played for thirteen years by the composer Anton Bruckner, whose improvisations still echo through the annual Bruckner Festival held here.
