Monatsschlössl (Folklore Museum Exterior)
The hilltop folklore-museum lodge that crowns the walk with a sweeping, ticket-free Stadtblick back over the park toward Salzburg's towers, fortress and mountains. From its terrace you can take in almost the whole free playground you have just explored.
Su questo luogo
Perched on an exposed forested spur high above the gardens, the Monatsschlössl rewards the final climb with the walk's loveliest free panorama: the Stadtblick, looking back over Hellbrunn's avenues and ponds to the silhouette of Salzburg, its church towers, the fortress on its hill, and the mountains beyond. The little lodge was raised in 1615 by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus as a modest hunting and pleasure retreat, a private hideaway away from the formality of the residence below. A persistent legend claims it was completed in a single month, which is exactly how it earned the nickname "Little Month Palace." Since 1924 its whitewashed rooms have housed Salzburg's Folklore Museum, the Volkskundemuseum, filled with embroidered regional Trachten, heavy carved farmhouse furniture, towering Samson figures, and the eerie carved Perchten masks of pre-Christian Alpine midwinter ritual. The museum interior needs a ticket, but the terrace, the walls and above all that elevated city-and-park view are completely free. It is the perfect place to stand still, breathe in the panorama, and let the whole day's wandering settle before you head home.
