Rosengarten

A hillside rose garden perched above the Aare bend, offering the single most photographed panorama of Bern's old town and its terracotta rooftops.

Su questo luogo

Rising on the slope of the Altenberg just across the river from the medieval core, the Rosengarten is where locals come to see their city whole. Some 220 varieties of roses, 200 kinds of iris and 28 types of rhododendron are arranged in terraced beds around a water lily pond, but the real draw sits beyond the flowers, where a stone balustrade frames the entire UNESCO listed old town cradled in the loop of the Aare. From here the Minster's slender spire, the pointed roofs of the Nydegg quarter and, on a clear day, the distant snow of the Alps line up in a single unforgettable view. It is a peaceful, ticket free garden that began, improbably, as a graveyard, and it makes a fitting final stop on a walk through Bern's arcades and fountains.
