Le Flon (Place de l'Europe)

A valley of century-old freight warehouses reborn as Lausanne's boldest quarter of design shops, bars, clubs and cinemas. Enter from Place de l'Europe, where the city's two metro lines cross beneath your feet.

Su questo luogo

Le Flon is Lausanne turned inside out. Where the Cité above is medieval stone stacked on a hilltop, the Flon is a flat, open grid of stern industrial sheds sitting in a valley that was once a river. In the nineteenth century this was the city's goods yard, a plateau of warehouses handling everything that arrived by rail. When the freight trade died in the 1950s the district decayed into a rough, half-forgotten backwater, until artists, clubs and finally a full urban regeneration brought it roaring back to life. Today the same concrete halls hold boutiques, restaurants, rooftop terraces, a multiplex cinema and some of the liveliest nightlife in French-speaking Switzerland. Place de l'Europe, the busy square at its edge, is the hinge where the Grand-Pont's arches, the metro and the pedestrian streets all meet.
