The Rosemarie Nitribitt Mystery - Eschenheimer Turm

On 1 November 1957 Rosemarie Nitribitt, 24, the call girl famous for her black Mercedes 190 SL, was found strangled in her flat at Stiftstraße 36, a stone's throw from this medieval gate tower. An acquaintance was tried and acquitted in 1960, and her murder is still unsolved.

Su questo luogo

The Eschenheimer Turm, finished around 1428 by Madern Gerthener and rising about 47 metres, is the proudest survivor of Frankfurt's medieval walls, spared when the fortifications were razed in the early 1800s. Yet the story that brings true crime fans here lies about 45 metres away, in a plain 1950s apartment block at Stiftstraße 36. In the autumn of 1957 this was the home of Rosemarie Nitribitt, a young woman of 24 from Düsseldorf who had risen from children's homes to become the most talked about call girl of the economic miracle, instantly recognisable in her black Mercedes 190 SL with red leather seats. On 1 November 1957 her cleaning lady, alarmed by bags of bread rolls piling up at the door, found her dead on the living room carpet, with a head wound and strangulation marks. What followed became a textbook of police failure: the floor heating was on full, windows were thrown open, nobody measured the temperature of the body or the flat, and journalists walked through the scene. Without a fixed time of death, the acquaintance who stood trial in 1960 was acquitted for lack of evidence. Rumours about the powerful men in her pocket diary never faded, her skull was kept as evidence for half a century, and the house has been a listed monument since 2013. Rosemarie Nitribitt's killer has never been found.
