Su questo luogo
The Pfaffenteich is Schwerin's most beloved urban water, a calm rectangle of roughly twelve hectares set right inside the city fabric rather than out among the surrounding lakes. Its name, which translates loosely as the 'priests' pond', recalls the medieval clergy of the nearby cathedral who tended gardens along its eastern shore. It is not a natural lake at all but a millpond, created when a dam was raised as early as the twelfth century to gather water and turn a mill. In the nineteenth century the city transformed the working pond into an elegant showpiece, laying out the tree-lined promenade and lining the banks with stately Gründerzeit facades. The undisputed landmark here is the Arsenal, a fairy-tale, castle-like brick building on the western shore, while a tiny historic passenger ferry still stitches the two banks together each summer.
