Altes Schloss (Landesmuseum Württemberg)

A moated medieval stronghold reborn as one of southern Germany's finest Renaissance palaces, its arcaded courtyard now guarding the treasures of the Landesmuseum Württemberg.

Su questo luogo

The Altes Schloss is the ancient heart of Stuttgart, standing where Duke Liudolf of Swabia raised a moated castle around the year 950 to protect the Stutengarten, the mares' garden that gave the city its name. For four centuries it served as the seat of the Counts and Dukes of Württemberg, until Duke Christoph transformed the fortress in the 1550s into a prestigious four-winged Renaissance residence crowned by three great round towers. Its inner courtyard, ringed by elegant tiered arcades in the Italian manner, is celebrated as one of the most beautiful Renaissance courtyards north of the Alps. A bronze horseman of Duke Eberhard im Bart presides over its centre. Today the historic shell houses the Landesmuseum Württemberg, the largest cultural-history museum in the state, where more than 250,000 years of history are told through Celtic princely graves, Roman relics, and the crown jewels of the Kingdom of Württemberg.
