Staatsgalerie Stuttgart

Two clashing buildings share one address here: a serene Neoclassical palace from 1843 and James Stirling's riotously colorful 1984 postmodern wing. Together they form one of Europe's great art museums.

Su questo luogo

Anchoring Stuttgart's Kulturmeile, or Culture Mile, the Staatsgalerie is really two museums in conversation. The original Alte Staatsgalerie opened in 1843 as a calm Neoclassical palace of pale stone, one of Germany's earliest public art collections. Beside it, the architect James Stirling grafted his audacious Neue Staatsgalerie in 1984, a building of honey colored travertine wrapped around an open air rotunda, splashed with hot pink and electric blue handrails and floored in green rubber. A public ramp threads straight through the grounds, so even passers by can wander over the hill for free. Inside wait around five thousand paintings and sculptures, from Old Masters to Picasso, Matisse and a whole room of Joseph Beuys, alongside the museum's beloved figurines from Oskar Schlemmer's Triadic Ballet.
