Gran Teatre del Liceu
Barcelona's grand opera house on La Rambla, one of the great lyric theatres of Europe, twice destroyed by fire and once bombed, and each time lovingly rebuilt by the city.
Su questo luogo
The Gran Teatre del Liceu, opened in 1847, is the most important opera house in Barcelona and among the oldest and most prestigious in Europe. Unlike many such theatres it was funded not by a royal court but by private shareholders of the city's wealthy bourgeoisie, which shaped its identity as a bastion of Catalan high society. Its history has been dramatic in every sense. An anarchist bomb was thrown into the stalls during a performance in 1893, killing many; the theatre was devastated by fire in 1861 and again, catastrophically, in 1994, when the auditorium was gutted. Each time the people of Barcelona rebuilt it, the most recent restoration recreating the opulent gilded horseshoe auditorium in loving detail. Today it hosts world-class opera and can be visited on guided tours.
