Plaza Nueva

A harmonious neoclassical square enclosed by arcades of some sixty-four arches, the social heart of the old town, lined with pintxos bars and host to a lively Sunday flea market.

Su questo luogo

The Plaza Nueva, or New Square, is one of the most elegant and sociable spaces in Bilbao, a perfectly enclosed rectangle in the neoclassical style, completed in 1851. Its four sides are formed by uniform buildings whose ground floors open into a continuous arcade of some sixty-four arches, sheltering a ring of cafes, restaurants and, above all, pintxos bars. This is one of the prime spots in the city for the txikiteo, the Basque tradition of strolling from bar to bar for a small glass of wine and a pintxo. The square hosts a popular flea market and collectors' fair every Sunday morning, selling stamps, coins, books and curiosities, and it comes alive during the city's August festival, the Aste Nagusia. Arcaded, shaded and convivial, it is the perfect place to sample the famous Basque bar culture.
