The Basílica de Sant Francesc is one of the most important churches in Palma, a grand Franciscan foundation begun in the thirteenth century. Behind a Baroque facade added later lies a soaring Gothic church and, beside it, one of the loveliest cloisters in Spain, a serene two-storey arcaded courtyard planted with palms and flowers, a haven of peace. The basilica's greatest treasure is the tomb of Ramon Llull, the extraordinary thirteenth-century Mallorcan philosopher, theologian, poet, mystic and missionary, who wrote pioneering works in the Catalan language, devised early logical machines, and is regarded as one of the most original minds of the Middle Ages. In the square outside stands a statue of another famous figure connected to the Franciscans here, Fray Junípero Serra, the Mallorcan friar who went on to found the chain of missions that became the great cities of California, including San Francisco.
