Plaza de la Constitución
The grand arcaded main square of the old town, ringed by balconied houses whose windows are curiously numbered, a relic of the days when the whole square served as a bullring.
Su questo luogo
The Plaza de la Constitución is the elegant heart of San Sebastián's old town, the Parte Vieja. Built in its present form in 1817, after an earlier square was destroyed when the city burned, it is a harmonious rectangle enclosed by arcaded buildings whose balconies rise several storeys. Look closely at those balconies and you will notice that each window is painted with a number. This is the square's most charming peculiarity: in the past the plaza was used as a bullring, and the numbered balconies were rented out as private boxes from which spectators could watch the corridas below. Today the arcades shelter lively bars and cafes, and the square remains the social hub of the old town. On the twentieth of January, the feast of Saint Sebastian, it becomes the focal point of the Tamborrada, the city's beloved all-day drumming festival.
