Parque da Alameda
A gracious nineteenth-century park on the edge of the old town, famous for its wooded walks, its statue of two beloved local sisters, and the postcard-perfect view of the cathedral's spires.
Su questo luogo
The Parque da Alameda is the great green space of Santiago, a romantic nineteenth-century park laid out on a hill just southwest of the old town. Its shady avenues of oak and eucalyptus, its formal gardens and tree-lined promenade, the Paseo da Ferradura, have long been the favourite place for the people of Santiago to stroll. The park holds several local landmarks, including a much-loved and slightly comic statue of As Marías, the Two Marias, a pair of eccentric sisters who famously promenaded here each day in brightly coloured clothes. But the park's greatest gift to the visitor is the view: from a terrace among the trees of the Carballeira de Santa Susana, you get the classic, breathtaking panorama of the whole old town crowned by the three great spires of the cathedral, the image that appears on a thousand postcards.
