Praza das Praterías

The intimate square of the silversmiths on the cathedral's south side, graced by an elegant fountain of horses and the only surviving Romanesque doorway of the cathedral.

Su questo luogo

The Praza das Praterías, the Square of the Silversmiths, is the smallest and most intimate of the four squares surrounding the cathedral, lying on its southern side. It takes its name from the silversmiths whose workshops and shops have clustered here for centuries, and some still trade beneath its arcades, selling silver jewellery and religious items. At its centre stands the graceful Fonte dos Cabalos, the Fountain of the Horses, a seventeenth-century fountain topped by a figure and adorned with sculpted horses. Rising above the square is the Praterías doorway of the cathedral, which has the special distinction of being the only one of the cathedral's original Romanesque facades to survive, its twelfth-century carvings still vivid. The square is also overlooked by the elegant Casa do Cabido, a narrow Baroque building that is really just a decorative screen, built to beautify the square.
