The Alcázar de Segovia is one of the most spectacular and romantic castles in all of Spain, rising dramatically on a sheer rocky crag at the very tip of the old town, where the two rivers that flank the city meet, so that from certain angles it looks exactly like the prow of a great stone ship sailing out over the valley. Its origins lie in a Moorish fortress, but over the centuries the Castilian kings transformed it into a royal palace and stronghold, adding the fairytale turrets, spires and battlements seen today, much of it reimagined after a fire in the nineteenth century. It has witnessed great history: it was here that Isabella the Catholic was proclaimed Queen of Castile in 1474, and it later served as a royal prison and a military artillery academy. With its soaring towers, lavish throne rooms and sweeping views, its romantic silhouette is famously said to have inspired the castle in Walt Disney's Cinderella.
