Catedral de Sevilla

The largest Gothic cathedral in the world, raised over a great Moorish mosque, holding the tomb of Christopher Columbus and crowned by the Giralda, a minaret turned bell tower.

Su questo luogo

The Cathedral of Seville, officially the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, is the largest Gothic church in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built between 1401 and 1506 on the site of the city's great Almohad mosque, and tradition records that the canons declared they would build a church so great that those who saw it finished would think them mad. The result is a cathedral of staggering scale and dark, soaring majesty, home to a vast gilded altarpiece and the grand tomb of Christopher Columbus, held aloft by four bronze heralds. Its most famous feature is the Giralda, the bell tower, which began life as the minaret of the mosque. Instead of stairs, a series of ramps climbs inside it, wide enough for a man on horseback to ride to the top, from where the views over Seville are magnificent.
