Catedral de València

Valencia's great cathedral, a layered blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque built over a mosque, famous above all for a chapel that holds what many believe to be the true Holy Grail.

Su questo luogo

The Cathedral of Valencia was begun in the thirteenth century, soon after the Christian reconquest of the city, on the site of the main mosque, which itself stood over a Roman temple. Built over many centuries, it mingles Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles in one fascinating whole, with three very different doorways reflecting different eras. Inside, it holds works by great painters including Goya. But its most famous treasure sits in a side chapel: the Santo Cáliz, the Holy Chalice, an ancient agate cup that many believe to be the very Grail used by Christ at the Last Supper, and which is recognised by the Church as a relic. The cathedral also preserves, somewhat gruesomely, a withered arm said to belong to Saint Vincent. Above it all rises the beloved Micalet bell tower.
