Su questo luogo
From the narrow street outside, the church of Saint Nicholas of Bari and Saint Peter Martyr looks modest enough, but step through its door and you enter one of the most overwhelming interiors in Spain. The church is Gothic in its bones, built on much older foundations, but in the late seventeenth century its entire vaulted ceiling and walls were covered with a vast cycle of Baroque frescoes depicting the lives of its two patron saints, painted in dazzling colour and dizzying movement. For centuries the paint lay darkened by grime and candle smoke, until a meticulous restoration completed in 2016 revealed the frescoes in their full, glowing glory. The transformation was so spectacular that Valencians and visitors alike began to call it the Sistine Chapel of Valencia, and it is now one of the city's unmissable sights.
