Koïfhus (Ancienne Douane)

Completed in 1480, the Koifhus is the oldest public building in Colmar, a Gothic and Renaissance customs house that once taxed the town's trade and hosted the Alsatian Decapole.

Su questo luogo

Standing where the rue des Marchands meets the Grand Rue, the Koifhus, or Ancienne Douane, was completed in 1480 and is the oldest public building in Colmar. Its ground floor, beneath a steep roof of glazed tiles, served as a warehouse and as the customs post where imported and exported goods were weighed and taxed. The upper hall was the meeting place of the Decapole, the federation of ten free imperial cities of Alsace. Restored between 1895 and 1898 and classified as a historic monument in 1930, it stands beside the Fontaine Schwendi, a bronze fountain created by Auguste Bartholdi and unveiled in 1898.
