The Place de la Libération is the ceremonial heart of Dijon, a sweeping half circle of rusticated stone arcades laid out by Jules Hardouin Mansart, chief architect to Louis XIV. Begun in 1685 and completed around 1686 as the Place Royale, it was built to frame an equestrian statue of the king, which revolutionaries later tore down. The square changed names many times through revolution, empire and occupation before becoming the Place de la Libération in 1944. A 2006 redesign banished traffic, laid the ground in pale local Comblanchien limestone and set three flat fountains into the pavement where children now play.
