Promenade du Peyrou
A grand hilltop royal esplanade on the city's highest point, offering sweeping views and centred on a Louis XIV statue, a neoclassical water temple and the arches of the Saint-Clément aqueduct.
Su questo luogo
Laid out in 1689 just beyond the old town walls, the Promenade du Peyrou is a wide royal esplanade on the highest ground in Montpellier, about fifty two metres above the sea, with views reaching north to the Pic Saint-Loup. At its centre stands an equestrian statue of Louis XIV, a bronze recast in 1828 after the original was pulled down and melted into cannon during the French Revolution. Its far western end is crowned by the hexagonal Chateau d'Eau, a neoclassical water temple built in 1768 by the engineer Henri Pitot, inventor of the Pitot tube. Behind it stretch the tiered arches of the Saint-Clément aqueduct, which carried fresh water fourteen kilometres into the city, making the Peyrou the perfect finale to a walk through the heart of Montpellier.
