Cours Saleya

The dazzling market street at the heart of Vieux Nice, famous for its flower market by day and its lively cafe terraces by night, once home to the painter Henri Matisse.

Su questo luogo

The Cours Saleya is the most famous square in old Nice, a long open space running through the heart of Vieux Nice. Once part of the old Saint-Lambert port where boats unloaded salt, giving the square its name, it is now the city's great market. In 1897 Nice opened the world's first wholesale cut flower market here, shipping fragrant blooms across Europe by rail. Today the stalls spill over with flowers, fruit, vegetables, olives, and spices from Tuesday to Sunday, while Mondays bring antiques and curiosities, and by night the square fills with the terraces of its many restaurants. At its eastern end stands the ochre building where Henri Matisse kept an apartment and studio until 1938.
