Su questo luogo
Once the medieval commercial centre of Rouen, the Place du Vieux-Marché is still a bustling square ringed by half timbered houses, cafes, and a covered market. Its name means old market, and traders have gathered here since the Middle Ages. Yet the square is forever bound to a single tragic event. On the thirtieth of May in 1431, the nineteen year old Joan of Arc was burned here as a heretic after a trial run by judges loyal to the English crown, and her ashes were cast into the Seine. In the nineteen seventies the whole square was redesigned around her memory, crowned by the striking modern church of Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, with a cross in the adjoining garden marking the site of the stake.
