Di cosa parla la passeggiata?

Welcome to Salzburg, a city world-famous for a film its own citizens barely acknowledge. The Sound of Music (1965) is a cultural institution across the USA, Britain and much of Asia, drawing more than 300,000 pilgrims here every single year to retrace Maria, the von Trapp children, and 'Do-Re-Mi'. Yet in Austria it is a genuine blind spot: it flopped on its brief 1965 release, was pulled from cinemas within days, went undubbed into German for decades, and most Austrians have simply never seen it. On this walk we'll follow the famous scenes through the Mirabell Gardens, the Baroque horse ponds, the festival stage and the real convent at Nonnberg, pulling Hollywood's sugar-coated myth apart from the real history at every stop. We'll see where Maria really was a novice, learn why 'Edelweiss' is an American song and not an Austrian anthem, and why the real family boarded a train to Italy rather than climbing over the mountains. For the few iconic spots that sit off our route or behind private gates, we'll find a quiet bench, sit, and let the story come to us. Please enjoy the gentle irony: a global icon the locals quietly shrug at.

Cosa vedrai

  1. 1

Mirabell Gardens - Pegasus Fountain & the Do-Re-Mi Steps

    Garden

The green heart of every Sound of Music pilgrimage: the winged Pegasus Fountain the children dance around and the stone staircase where they belt out the finale of Do-Re-Mi. It is the postcard Salzburg millions picture, and the perfect place to unpick why the whole world adores a film Austrians barely know.

Mirabell Gardens - Dwarf Garden & Rose Arbour

    Garden

A shady Baroque corner where grinning marble dwarves and a tunnel of roses hide in plain sight. The von Trapp children dance and sing their way through here in Do-Re-Mi, patting each stone head as they go.

The Makartsteg - Crossing the Salzach

    Bridge

A slender glass and steel footbridge over the rushing green Salzach, its railings buried under thousands of lovers' padlocks. From the middle you get the classic Salzburg postcard of river, old town and fortress that the film made world famous.

    Pferdeschwemme - the Horse Pond

    Fountain

A Baroque bath fit for royalty, where the prince archbishops once watered and scrubbed their court horses beneath a rearing marble stallion. Today it is a stop on the Do Re Mi trail that most locals have no idea is famous.

    The Festival Halls & Felsenreitschule

    Festival Hall

An open air theatre whose stage is a cliff of ninety six arches carved straight into the Mönchsberg. It is the real Salzburg Festival stage where the von Trapps sing their farewell and slip away in the film's finale.

    Residenzplatz & the Horse Fountain

    Square

Salzburg's grandest baroque square, anchored by a towering fountain whose four marble horses Maria splashes as she sings 'I Have Confidence'. A stage for the film's sunniest moment, and for one of the city's darkest.

    St Peter's Cemetery (Petersfriedhof)

    Cemetery

One of the oldest and loveliest Christian cemeteries in the world, its wrought iron graves and arcaded crypts pressed against the sheer Mönchsberg cliff. It inspired the film's famous graveyard escape, yet not a single frame of that scene was ever shot here.

  8. 8

    Kapitelplatz & the Kapitelschwemme

    Square

A broad, sunny cathedral square beneath the fortress, where a giant golden sphere and a permanent chessboard share the cobbles with a theatrical Baroque horse pond. This is Salzburg exhaling, the last easy ground before the stone steps climb to Maria's real convent.

    Stift Nonnberg - Nonnberg Abbey

    Abbey

The genuine convent where Maria Augusta Kutschera was a postulant before she married Georg von Trapp in 1927, and the real abbey filmed in the movie. It is also the oldest continuously operating nunnery in the German-speaking world.

The Gazebo Viewpoint - 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen'

    Viewpoint

A little glass pavilion that launched a million photographs, where Liesl twirls through 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' and Maria later finds Something Good. The catch? It is not here, but four kilometres south in the gardens of Hellbrunn Palace.

The von Trapp Villa Viewpoint - Leopoldskron & Frohnburg

    Viewpoint

The famous von Trapp mansion was never one house but two, both hidden to the south and both off limits to visitors. From this quiet viewpoint you can gaze toward them and finally separate the Hollywood home from the real family who fled Salzburg.
