Di cosa parla la passeggiata?

Welcome to Toulouse, the Ville Rose, a city that blushes pink at every turn thanks to the rosy brick of its churches, palaces, and squares. On this walk we trace a tight, rewarding loop through the historic heart, from the delightfully mismatched Cathedrale Saint-Etienne to the lively cafes of Place Saint-Georges, the grand Place du Capitole, the aromatic Marche Victor Hugo, and the mighty Romanesque Basilique Saint-Sernin. We will wander past a Gothic convent, a venerated Black Madonna, and a dazzling Renaissance mansion before ending where the city looks its most beautiful, on the Pont Neuf above the Garonne at golden hour. Comfortable shoes and an appetite for both history and good food are all you need.

Cosa vedrai

  1. 1

    Cathédrale Saint-Étienne

    Cathedral

Toulouse's gloriously mismatched cathedral, where a wide Romanesque-Gothic nave and a soaring later choir meet at an angle because the two halves were built centuries apart and never properly aligned. The lopsided result is one of the most unusual great churches in France.

  2. 2

    Place Saint-Georges

    Square

A lively, cafe-ringed square that is today one of Toulouse's favourite meeting spots, yet for centuries served as the city's public execution ground. Its most infamous victim, Jean Calas, helped ignite Voltaire's crusade for religious tolerance.

  3. 3

    Place du Capitole

    Square

The grand civic heart of Toulouse, dominated by the long pink-brick facade of the Capitole, the city hall and opera house, and marked across its pavement by a giant bronze Occitan cross. For centuries this has been the city's stage for celebration and protest alike.

  4. 4

    Marché Victor Hugo

    Market

Toulouse's beloved covered food market, a cool, fragrant hall of more than two hundred stalls selling duck, cheese, Toulouse sausage and everything the Southwest loves to eat. Upstairs, tiny restaurants cook lunch straight from the produce sold below.

    Basilique Saint-Sernin

    Basilica

The largest surviving Romanesque church in Europe, raised over the tomb of Toulouse's first bishop and a major stop on the medieval pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela.

    Eglise Notre-Dame du Taur

    Church

A tall southern Gothic church fronted by a striking flat bell wall of pink brick, marking the spot where legend says the bull finally dropped the body of the martyred Saint Saturnin.

    Couvent des Jacobins

    Abbey

A soaring Gothic brick convent, cradle of the Dominican order, whose famous palm tree vault fans out from a single central column above the relics of Thomas Aquinas.

    Basilique Notre-Dame de la Daurade

    Basilica

A neoclassical basilica on the banks of the Garonne, famous for its venerated Black Madonna known as Notre Dame La Noire. It stands where a gilded, golden-mosaic church welcomed pilgrims from late Roman times.

    Hôtel d'Assézat

    Landmark

The finest Renaissance mansion in Toulouse, built in the 1550s on a fortune made from woad, the blue dye that was the city's medieval gold. Its elegant courtyard now shelters the Bemberg Foundation's art collection.
