The Castillo de Santa Bárbara crowns the summit of Monte Benacantil, the great rocky hill that rises some one hundred and sixty metres directly above the heart of Alicante, and it is one of the largest medieval fortresses in all of Spain. The hill has been fortified since ancient times, but the castle's origins as we know it lie in the period of Moorish rule, and it takes its name from Saint Barbara because it was captured by Christian forces on her feast day, the fourth of December, in 1248. Over the centuries it was greatly expanded and strengthened, with walls, bastions, dungeons and halls from many eras, and it served as a key stronghold guarding the city and coast. Today it is reached easily by a lift bored through the rock, and its ramparts offer simply breathtaking, panoramic views in every direction, over the whole city, the sweeping bay, the port and the endless blue Mediterranean.
