The Explanada de España is the most emblematic promenade in Alicante and one of the loveliest seafront walks in Spain. Running along the waterfront beside the marina, it is famous above all for its pavement: a dazzling mosaic of some six and a half million small marble tiles, in red, cream and black, laid in a sinuous, undulating wave pattern that seems to ripple beneath your feet like the sea itself. Four long rows of tall palm trees line the promenade, casting welcome shade, and there is a bandstand where concerts are held on summer evenings. Built in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries on land reclaimed from the sea, the Explanada has always been the great gathering place of the city, the place for the evening paseo, the leisurely stroll, lined with cafes, flower stalls and craft stalls. It is the sunny, palm-fringed heart of Alicante's seafront life.
