Über diesen Ort
Plaça de Catalunya is Barcelona's great meeting point and the symbolic centre of the city. Covering some fifty thousand square metres, this broad plaza was laid out in the late nineteenth century on what had been open land just outside the old city walls, precisely where the cramped medieval town gave way to the spacious new district of the Eixample. Today it is a swirl of fountains, statues, flower sellers and clattering pigeons, ringed by grand department stores, banks and cafes. From here the famous Rambla flows down toward the sea, while the shopping avenues of Passeig de Gràcia and Portal de l'Àngel strike off in other directions. For locals and visitors alike it is the natural place to begin, to meet, and to feel the full pulse of the city.
