Plaça del Rei

A perfectly preserved medieval square enclosed by the palace of the Counts of Barcelona, where tradition says Columbus was received after his first voyage, with the Roman city surviving beneath.

Über diesen Ort

Tucked behind the cathedral, the Plaça del Rei, the King's Square, is one of the most atmospheric medieval spaces in Barcelona, a stone courtyard enclosed on all sides by the buildings of the former royal palace of the Counts of Barcelona and Kings of Aragon. Dominating it is the great arched hall of the Saló del Tinell and the slender watchtower of King Martí rising in tiers above the rooftops. By tradition, it was on the fan-shaped steps of this square that the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, received Christopher Columbus on his triumphant return from the Americas in 1493. Beneath the square and surrounding buildings lies an extraordinary archaeological site, part of the City History Museum, where visitors can walk through the excavated streets, shops and workshops of Roman Barcino, two thousand years below the medieval city.
