Über diesen Ort
The Torre Tavira is the highest of the many watchtowers that rise above the old town of Cádiz, and it tells one of the most charming stories of the city's golden age. In the eighteenth century, when Cádiz grew rich on the American trade, the city bristled with well over a hundred of these towers, built atop the merchants' houses. From them, the merchants and their agents would scan the horizon of the sea, watching anxiously for the first sight of their trading ships returning from the Americas, for the arrival of a ship laden with goods could make or break a fortune. The Torre Tavira, being the tallest and designated the city's official watchtower, offered the finest view of all. Today it houses a camera obscura, a darkened room where a lens and mirror project a live, moving image of the whole city onto a screen, a magical experience, and its terrace offers the best panoramic view of Cádiz.
