Basílica de Sant Feliu

A grand Gothic basilica beside the cathedral, its tall bell tower famously truncated by a lightning strike, holding ancient Roman sarcophagi and the relics of the city's patron saints.

Über diesen Ort

The Basílica de Sant Feliu, Saint Felix, stands just below and beside the cathedral and is one of the most important churches in Girona, for a long time rivalling the cathedral itself. Built mainly in the Gothic style on Romanesque foundations, over an early Christian burial ground, it is instantly recognisable by its tall bell tower, whose pointed spire was struck by lightning in the eighteenth century and never fully rebuilt, leaving it curiously truncated, a much-loved landmark of the city skyline. Within, the basilica holds a remarkable collection of ancient pagan and early Christian Roman sarcophagi, set into the walls of the presbytery, and it guards the relics of the city's patron saints, Saint Felix and Saint Narcissus. Saint Narcissus is the subject of a famous local legend of the flies, said to have swarmed from his tomb to defend the city against invaders.
