Corral del Carbón

The oldest Moorish building in Granada, a rare surviving fourteenth-century caravanserai, a fortified inn and warehouse for merchants, entered through a magnificent horseshoe arch.

Über diesen Ort

The Corral del Carbón is the oldest Arab building to survive in Granada and one of the very few caravanserais, or merchants' inns, left anywhere in Spain. Built in the fourteenth century under the Nasrid sultans, it served as a secure lodging house and warehouse, where travelling merchants could store their goods on the ground floor and sleep in rooms around the upper galleries of its central courtyard. Its grandest feature is its monumental entrance, a tall horseshoe arch framed by delicate carved decoration and an inscription, one of the finest Moorish gateways in the city. After the Christian conquest the building served various purposes, including as a coal merchants' yard, which gave it its present Spanish name, the Coal Yard. Beautifully restored, it is now a cultural centre, and its serene courtyard offers a glimpse into the commercial life of Moorish Granada.
