Calle Marqués de Larios, known to everyone simply as Calle Larios, is the most elegant and prestigious street in Málaga. Opened in 1891 and named after the Marquis of Larios, a wealthy industrialist whose family drove the city's development, it cuts a broad, straight line through the old town, linking the central Plaza de la Constitución with the area near the port. Paved from side to side in gleaming marble and lined with harmonious nineteenth-century buildings showing a touch of Chicago-school influence, it is now a fully pedestrian avenue and the city's premier shopping street. It comes into its own during festivals, above all the famous Málaga Fair and, most spectacularly, at Christmas, when it is hung with an elaborate canopy of lights and music that draws visitors from across Spain.
