Teatro Romano

A well-preserved Roman theatre from the first century, nestled at the foot of the Moorish Alcazaba, rediscovered in 1951 after centuries hidden beneath later buildings.

Über diesen Ort

The Roman Theatre of Málaga sits dramatically at the foot of the Alcazaba, a vivid reminder that long before the Moors, this was a Roman city called Malaca. Built in the first century BC, around the reign of Augustus, and used for some three hundred years, it is a classic Roman theatre with tiered seating cut into the hillside facing a stage. After the fall of Rome it was abandoned, and the Moors later quarried its fine stone and marble columns to build the Alcazaba above, so that pieces of the Roman theatre survive within the Moorish fortress. For centuries the theatre lay buried and forgotten beneath the city, until it was rediscovered in 1951 during works on a building that stood on the site. Excavated and restored, it is now open to view and even hosts performances once again, two thousand years after it first opened.
