The Plaça de Cort is the civic heart of Palma, the square from which the city has long been governed. It is dominated by the Ajuntament, the city hall, a handsome building whose golden Baroque facade is crowned by one of the most distinctive features in Palma: a deep, ornately carved wooden roof overhang, or eaves, projecting far out over the square, a masterpiece of the carpenter's art. But the square's most beloved resident is not a building at all, but a tree. In the centre of the Plaça de Cort stands a magnificent, gnarled old olive tree, its trunk twisted into extraordinary knots and hollows by the centuries. Known affectionately as s'olivera, it was brought here from the countryside and is said to be many hundreds of years old, perhaps close to a thousand, a living link to the island's deep agricultural roots and a favourite spot for photographs.
