Baños Árabes

The best-preserved Arab baths in Spain, a beautifully intact medieval hammam of horseshoe arches and star-shaped skylights, set beside a stream in the old tanners' quarter below the town.

Über diesen Ort

The Baños Árabes of Ronda, dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, are widely considered the best-preserved Arab baths in all of Spain. They lie below the old town, beside a stream in what was once the quarter of the tanners and craftsmen, where water was plentiful, conveniently placed so that travellers and traders arriving at the town could purify themselves before entering. The baths follow the classic hammam plan inherited from Roman tradition, a sequence of cold, warm and hot rooms, and they survive remarkably intact. The central warm chamber is particularly beautiful: brick horseshoe arches on stout columns divide the space, and the barrel-vaulted ceiling is pierced with dozens of distinctive star- and octagon-shaped skylights that once let shafts of light fall through the steam. An ingenious system brought and heated the water. Walking through these cool, atmospheric chambers is to step straight into the daily life of Moorish Ronda.
