Puente Viejo

The Old Bridge, a graceful single-arched stone bridge crossing the gorge at a lower, gentler point, offering beautiful views up the chasm toward the great Puente Nuevo.

Über diesen Ort

The Puente Viejo, the Old Bridge, crosses the El Tajo gorge at a lower and much gentler point than its famous younger sibling, near the Arab baths and the old gates of the town. A graceful single-arched bridge of golden stone, it is thought to have been built in the seventeenth century, possibly on older Moorish or even Roman foundations, and for a long time it was one of the main crossings between the two halves of Ronda before the mighty Puente Nuevo was built. Standing on it, or nearby, you get a beautiful and different perspective on the gorge, looking up the narrowing chasm toward the towering arches of the Puente Nuevo in the distance, framed by the rock walls and greenery, with the river running beneath you. Peaceful and far less crowded than the great bridge above, it is a lovely and tranquil place to end a walk through this most dramatic of towns.
