Über diesen Ort
Standing at the far end of the fishing harbour, where the quay meets the open sea, the Aquarium of San Sebastián is one of the oldest in Spain, first opened in 1928. More than just an aquarium, it is also a museum of the sea, telling the story of the Basque country's deep and ancient relationship with the ocean, from its fishermen and whalers to its great navigators. Among its exhibits is the skeleton of a whale and historic maritime artefacts. Its modern highlight is a large oceanarium with a walk-through glass tunnel, where visitors pass beneath sharks, rays and shoals of fish swimming overhead, an experience especially loved by children. Set right at the water's edge beneath Monte Urgull, with the waves breaking just outside, it is a fitting celebration of the sea that has shaped this city.
