Paseo Nuevo

A dramatic seaside promenade encircling the base of Monte Urgull, open to the full force of the Cantabrian Sea, where on stormy days giant waves crash spectacularly over the railings.

Über diesen Ort

The Paseo Nuevo, the New Promenade, is a broad walkway completed in the early twentieth century that runs around the seaward base of Monte Urgull, linking the fishing harbour on the bay side with the mouth of the river Urumea and the Zurriola beach on the other. Unlike the sheltered calm of La Concha, this promenade faces the open ocean directly, with nothing between it and the Bay of Biscay. On fine days it offers bracing walks and wonderful views of the coast and the waves breaking on the rocks. But it is most famous, and most thrilling, in stormy weather, when great Atlantic swells roll in and explode against the sea wall, sending towering sheets of white spray and water crashing right over the promenade, a spectacular natural show that draws crowds of onlookers to watch, at a safe distance, the raw power of the Cantabrian Sea.
