The Plaza Virgen de los Reyes is perhaps the most iconic public space in Seville, the postcard view that captures the whole romance of the city. On one side soars the Giralda and the great flank of the cathedral; on another stands the handsome Baroque facade of the Archbishop's Palace; nearby is the old Convent of the Incarnation. At the centre a graceful monumental fountain and lamp, designed by the sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera and unveiled in 1929 for Seville's great Ibero-American Exposition, is wrapped in ceramic tilework. Horse-drawn carriages line up here waiting for passengers, their harness bells jingling, and in spring the square fills with the scent of orange blossom. It is the natural gathering point between the cathedral and the Santa Cruz quarter, and the setting for some of the city's most solemn Holy Week processions.
