The Puerta de Bisagra is the principal and most imposing gateway into the old walled city of Toledo. Though a gate has stood here since Moorish times, the grand structure seen today was largely rebuilt in the mid-sixteenth century by the architect Alonso de Covarrubias for the Emperor Charles the Fifth, who made Toledo a favoured residence. It consists of two parts flanking a courtyard, with mighty round towers and, above the outer arch, a colossal stone carving of the imperial coat of arms, dominated by the double-headed Habsburg eagle, proclaiming the power of the emperor to all who entered. For centuries every traveller, merchant and monarch entering the capital passed beneath this gate. It remains the ceremonial threshold of the city and the natural starting point for a descent into its historic heart.
