Rue Sainte-Catherine

One of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe, running more than a kilometre along the line of an ancient Roman road. It is the lively, crowded commercial heart of Bordeaux.

Über diesen Ort

The Rue Sainte-Catherine is the main shopping street of Bordeaux and often billed as the longest pedestrian street in Europe, running more than a kilometre from the Grand Théâtre in the north to Place de la Victoire in the south. Remarkably, it follows the line of the ancient Roman cardo, the main north to south axis of the city the Romans called Burdigala, so people have traded along this exact route for almost two thousand years. Today it is lined with fashion boutiques, department stores, cafés, and street performers, and on a busy day tens of thousands of shoppers crowd its paving stones. For most of its history it carried carts and traffic, but the city closed it to vehicles in stages during the nineteen seventies, and by 1984 it had become fully pedestrian. We pause near Place Saint-Projet, with its old stone cross and fountain, at the street's lively heart.
