Cathédrale Saint-Bénigne

Dijon's twin spired Gothic cathedral rises above the tomb of Saint Benignus, the city's patron, and conceals a rare circular crypt a thousand years old.

Über diesen Ort

The Cathédrale Saint-Bénigne stands on one of the oldest sacred sites in Burgundy, the burial place of Saint Benignus, a missionary said to have brought Christianity to the region in Roman times. Around the year 990 the abbot William of Volpiano raised a vast Romanesque church crowned by a circular rotunda seventeen metres across, the lowest level of which still survives as the crypt. After the central tower collapsed in 1272, the people of Dijon rebuilt the church in Gothic style between 1280 and 1325, giving it the tall pale facade and twin spires seen today. Beside it, the former abbey buildings with their colourful tiled roof now house an archaeological museum.
