Église Saint-Michel

A parish church begun in 1499 whose spectacular facade, where flamboyant Gothic meets the Renaissance, is counted among the most beautiful church fronts in France.

Über diesen Ort

The Eglise Saint-Michel is the grand finale of the old town, famous above all for its façade. Work began in 1499 to replace an earlier church that had become too small, paid for month by month by the people of the parish, and the main body was completed in 1529. The lower church was conceived in the late Gothic spirit, but the façade rose through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, by which time Burgundy had embraced Italian Renaissance forms, so the two styles are layered one above the other in a single dazzling composition. Above the central doorway the sculptors carved the drama of the Last Judgement amid flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance ornament, while two towers added in the seventeenth century are topped with cupolas and gleaming golden spheres. Inside wait a soaring nave, old paintings, a fifteenth century stone tomb and a graceful eighteenth century pulpit.
