Place de la Comedie
Montpellier's vast, egg shaped main square and its beating heart, framed by the grand 1888 Opera Comedie and the marble Three Graces fountain. This is where the whole city comes to stroll, sip coffee and watch the world go by.
Über diesen Ort
Place de la Comedie is the undisputed centre of Montpellier and one of the largest pedestrian squares in Europe, sprawling across some eighteen thousand five hundred square meters. Locals nickname it l'Oeuf, the Egg, for its rounded ovoid shape, a name that also recalls the eighteenth century habit of promenading in a slow loop around the open space. The square takes its official name from the grand Opera Comedie at its southern end, an Italian style theatre built between 1884 and 1888, while its elegant curving facades were raised in the Haussmann style that was reshaping Paris at the same time. At its heart stands the fountain of the Three Graces, three dancing figures first carved in Carrara marble in 1776. Today the square hums with cafe terraces, buskers and the sleek trams that glide across its worn paving stones.
