The Church Attack - Basilique Notre-Dame
On the morning of 29 October 2020 a man armed with a knife attacked people inside the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Nice on the avenue Jean Medecin, killing three, before police confronted and stopped him; he was later convicted and sentenced to life, and this stop remembers the victims and the swift response rather than the attacker.
Über diesen Ort
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Nice rises over the avenue Jean Medecin, the city's main shopping street, its twin towers modelled on the great Gothic cathedrals of northern France. It is the largest church in Nice, a place of quiet prayer in the middle of a busy modern avenue. On the morning of 29 October 2020 that quiet was shattered when a man entered the basilica with a knife and attacked those inside, killing three people, among them a member of the church's staff and a worshipper who managed to flee to a nearby cafe before she died. Police arrived within minutes, confronted the attacker and stopped him, and the area around the avenue was sealed off as the city reeled. France treated it as a terrorist attack. The man was taken into custody, tried, and in 2025 convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. In line with the care we take throughout this walk, he is not named here; this stop belongs to the victims and to those who responded.
