In Memory of the Angels - Promenade des Anglais
On the night of 14 July 2016, as crowds gathered on the Promenade des Anglais for the Bastille Day fireworks, a 19-tonne lorry was deliberately driven about two kilometres through the crowd, killing 86 people and injuring more than 450 before police stopped the driver; this stop honours the victims and the responders, and in 2022 eight people were convicted for supporting roles in the attack.
Über diesen Ort
The Promenade des Anglais is the soul of Nice, a wide seaside walkway where locals and visitors stroll, cycle and gather to watch the sun set over the Bay of Angels. On the evening of 14 July 2016, France's national holiday, thousands of families lined this seafront to watch the Bastille Day fireworks. At the end of the display a heavy lorry was deliberately driven at speed into the crowd, travelling roughly two kilometres along the Promenade before police brought the vehicle to a halt. Eighty-six people were killed and more than 450 injured, in one of the deadliest attacks in modern French history. In the aftermath the city came together in grief and defiance, and a memorial was created to remember those who died, among them many children. In 2022 a French court convicted eight people of supporting roles in preparing the attack. We tell this story not for the man who carried it out, but for the victims, the survivors and the people who rushed to help.
