Über diesen Ort
The Fontaine Sube rises at the centre of the Place Drouet d'Erlon, funded by a bequest of two hundred thousand gold francs from a local benefactor and inaugurated in 1906. Its tall stone column, carved with vines that nod to the champagne trade, is ringed by seated figures representing the rivers of the region and topped by a gilded bronze Victory with outstretched wings. The original figure was pulled down and melted by the German occupiers in 1942 and only recast and restored in 1983. Having survived the shelling that flattened much of Reims in the First World War, the fountain remains the beloved and much debated focal point of the city's liveliest square.
