Kiki-Kogelnik-Brunnen & Landhaushof

A singing marble fountain by Carinthia's most adventurous modern artist, tucked into the leafy park beside the grand Renaissance Landhaus.

Sobre este lugar

Set in the quiet Landhaus Park beside Klagenfurt's Renaissance parliament building, the Kiki-Kogelnik-Brunnen is a fountain the artist titled 'Der Gesang', meaning 'The Song'. Rising 4.30 meters from pale Sölker marble and studded with bronze masks weathered to a soft green, it sends water flowing from the masks' open, singing mouths so the whole sculpture becomes a frozen chorus. Kiki Kogelnik, born in Carinthia in 1935 and later a New York fixture in Pop Art and performance circles, conceived it as a cheerful, playful monument for her home province, a deliberate counterpoint to the snarling Lindwurm dragon on the nearby main square. She died in 1997, only months before the fountain was unveiled that September, making its endless song a gentle farewell to the city she came from. Framing the little park is the Landhaus itself, built between 1574 and 1594 as the seat of the Carinthian estates and still the home of the regional parliament, its deliberately asymmetrical towers and hidden Hall of Coats of Arms rewarding anyone who wanders into the arcaded courtyard.
