Landhaus

A stately Renaissance palace crowned by twin onion-domed towers, built by Carinthia's nobility as their seat of power. Behind its calm facade hides the Wappensaal, a baroque hall ablaze with 665 painted coats of arms.

Sobre este lugar

The Landhaus is the finest secular Renaissance building in Klagenfurt, raised between 1574 and 1594 on the site of a former ducal castle by order of the Carinthian estates, the assembly of nobles and clergy who effectively governed the province while the Habsburg emperors ruled from afar. Its horseshoe plan wraps around a graceful two-storey arcaded courtyard, and two slender towers capped with onion domes give the building its unmistakable silhouette. A devastating fire in 1723 gutted much of the interior, prompting a lavish baroque restoration that produced the building's crowning glory, the Great Wappensaal, or Hall of Coats of Arms. Today the Landhaus still serves as the seat of the Carinthian state parliament, so this is not a museum piece but a living centre of regional politics, where lawmakers still gather beneath frescoes painted almost three centuries ago.
